Module 34, Detergents Regulation: Science and Compliance (34.001)
The science and reasons behind specific requirements for placing detergents on the market in the EU and UK
We all use detergents to clean our homes, wash dishes, clean clothes, or remove muddy pawprints from the carpet. This widespread consumer use in the presence of children, vulnerable adults and animals, and with rinsing into waste water, mean that there is a high potential exposure to these chemical products.
Regulations in the EU and UK therefore need to consider the balance between effective cleaning and potential risk from exposure. Risk reduction is achieved by regulating the content and identification of hazards, and ensuring low indirect hazard from the environment. And we must not forget the potential direct harm to the environment from toxicity or eutrophication.
We are aware of phrases such as ‘biodegradable’ and ‘environmentally friendly’, but is there really anything that is friendly to the environment? And are biodegradable materials safe?
To enable the chemical industry to take a responsible position when supplying cleaning products and other household chemicals, it is important for those involved to have at least a basic understanding of the fate and effects of chemicals in the environment and to consider direct health effects to users.
This training module is intended for those working within the chemical industry who are involved in the formulation, manufacture and supply of detergents and detergent ingredients. This includes the legal status of detergents, specific labelling requirements and, of course, understanding if risk is acceptable for the intended use.

Topics Covered Include:
• The importance of knowing potential environmental effects
• Background to regulatory requirements for testing
• Test method references
• Basic types of ecotoxicity studies
• Descriptions of terms and jargon
• Importance of physico chemical properties
• Supporting chemical analysis
• Biodegradation and persistence
• Introduction to endocrine disruption
• Application of CLP with basic classification
• Understanding of Section 12 of the SDS

Related Modules
Module 34 covers the broad topics relating to the supply of detergents products, but for greater in-depth understanding of environmental and health effects, and use of data for classification and labelling under CLP, CHCS run further modules. Please see www.chcs.org.uk/chemical-hazards-training for details of all courses and dates.

Module Tutor
The training will be provided by Mark Selby of Denehurst Chemical Safety Ltd. Mark had many years' experience in this sector, from manufacturing industry to contract test laboratories, and now consulting.
Module Presentation
We will deliver this training using an online system, which we have used successfully for other CHCS events and training. There is no charge to delegates for using the software. The licence cost is borne by CHCS.
The sessions will run live and delegates can interact with the tutor and other delegates using their device microphone. The tutor will use a PowerPoint presentation, just as they would in face-to-face training.
We will provide you with copies of the presentation and all other supporting documentation in advance of the training, by email. We will provide you with a document giving more details about using the software plus some tips for getting the best out of the day.
