Module 81, The New CLP Hazard Classes

This module is designed to give delegates an understanding of the new CLP hazard classes. It will cover some of the science behind them as well as the classification criteria themselves. The course will also outline some of the potential knock-on effects of the new legislation and practical steps that companies can take to prepare themselves for the introduction of the new hazard classes.

    What You Will Learn

This course, delivered live online will cover the following topics:

    • What are the new hazard classes? Why are they of concern?

    • How do we classify substances for the new hazard classes?
      • Finding and using existing data
      • Non animal methods
      • Testing

    • Classification of mixtures for the new hazard classes

    • Hazard Communication
      • Labelling
      • Safety Data Sheets

    • Timings and transition periods

    • What to do next?
      • Identifying potential problems
      • Supply chain management
      • Knock-on impacts

    Who Should Attend?

The Module is aimed at established writers of Safety Data Sheets and regulatory personnel who are already familiar with CLP classification but now need to know the detail about the new hazard classes. To get the most benefit, delegates should also have a basic knowledge of chemistry, toxicology and ecotoxicology, although key concepts will be explained.

    Benefits Of Attending?

The module uses a mixture of teaching and practical exercises to classify substances according to CLP criteria. This classification will be a core requirement for production of compliant safety data sheets and labelling, and an indicator to your customer and regulatory agencies of due diligence. To ensure the most effective training with optimum involvement in participative exercises, there will be a limit of 14 on the number of students.

IOSH members are entitled to include this module in their continuing professional development records.

The tutor will use a PowerPoint presentation, just as they would in face-to-face training. We will provide you with copies of the presentation and all other supporting documentation in advance of the training, by email. We will provide you with a document giving more details about using the software plus some tips for getting the best out of the sessions.

    Module Tutors

Gill Pagliuca has worked in chemical safety for more than 30 years, providing consultancy services including classification and preparation of safety data sheets for a wide range of customers and products.

Mark Selby had many years' experience in this sector, from manufacturing industry, to contract test laboratories and now consulting.

    Module Presentation

We will deliver this training using online training software, which we have used successfully for other CHCS training courses. There is no charge to delegates for using the software. The licence cost is borne by CHCS.

The sessions will run live and delegates can interact with the tutor and other delegates using their device microphone.

    Delegate Feedback

Comments from previous delegates on this training module:

“The training thoroughly covered the background behind the new classifications and what it would mean for us, in addition to giving a good look at the future for the classifications within GHS.”

“It was great to have the detailed explanations of the definitions of ED, P, B, T and M and how it all comes into the regulation. The example at the end was very helpful to put it into perspective.”

“Good awareness of the new hazards and the system of classification, some good explanations into the scientific reasoning behind the new classification."
