Module 22, Essentials of Regulatory Chemistry - Substances, Mixtures and Polymers

This CHCS course is designed to provide participants with an overview of naming substances, mixtures and polymers in the context of chemical control regulations such as food contact and Notification and Registration schemes. During this one-day course participants will gain an insight into the complex world of chemical nomenclature, an aspect fundamental to compliance with chemical regulation, and apply it to their own areas of work. In particular participants will:

  • understand the different types of chemicals and how they are defined and named.
  • understand how chemicals are named by the different systems used in various chemical based legislation.
  • understand how to identify and characterise chemicals from analytical data.
  • learn where to look for data and how to assess data reliability and understand the importance of data sharing.
  • review similarities and differences of global inventories, how polymers are regulated around the world and examine new substance notification schemes.

The course presenter is a well-established regulatory specialist and chemical expert from an international chemical background. He had to make the transition from Regular Chemistry to Regulatory Chemistry and will draw extensively on his experience in presentations and exercises. If you are struggling to see how chemicals are regulated, or to understand complex rules on how chemicals are named, or if you are a chemist moving into the Regulatory area, then this course will be helpful valuable and informative. It also provides a stepping stone to other CHCS modules on more specific areas such as transport of dangerous goods, preparing safety data sheets, classification and labelling, risk characterisation as well as toxicology and ecotoxicology. It should be seen as a complimentary course alongside the modules on European and Asia Pacific chemical control regulations.

Highlights

  • Definitions of Substances, Mixtures and Polymers
  • Nomenclature systems
  • Chemical Characterisation
  • Regulation of Substances Mixtures & Polymers

In addition, delegates will take part in exercises in which they could apply the teachings to their own particular situations. Delegates are encouraged to bring to the training session live examples from their own work situation for discussion amongst the group.

Who Should Attend

This module is specially designed for a wide audience of those involved or responsible for regulatory compliance, and in particular:

  • new recruits into the field of regulatory compliance
  • technical or scientific staff in companies manufacturing chemical based products
  • regulatory professionals without a classical chemical background

Module Tutor

Colin Rogers spent 29 years heading up the Regulatory departments in major multinational chemical manufacturers, part of which held the responsibility for Regulatory Compliance. Colin has extensive experience in Notification of new chemicals in many jurisdictions around the world and REACH Registrations, as well as an intimate knowledge of those regulations controlling uses such as food contact, toys and cosmetics. Colin now runs his own consultancy on Regulatory and Quality compliance.

EU Brexit

The 'Brexit' outcome from the June 2016 referendum is unlikely to affect the importance of compliance with EU legislation. As now, businesses supplying chemicals in other EU Member States or in the European Economic Area will have to comply with European law. The future requirements on those supplying chemicals only in the UK may only become certain when the terms of the exit have been agreed. However existing experience is that open access to the EU market is associated with national adherence to the same standards.

Delegate Feedback

“The presenter was very knowledgeable. I like how he explained Chemical Inventories other than those in Europe.”

“Good overall view of the subject.”

“Content was good and presenter conveyed info well.”

“Clear and precise”

“It’s good that there were exercises after a few of the sections of training allowing to put into practice the information covered in that section.”

CHCS is delighted to have an arrangement with the US-based Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC) whereby SCHC members can attend CHCS events at CHCS member-only rates and vice versa. If you are a member of SCHC and wish to attend this course, please email the CHCS Office at enquiries@chcs.org.uk providing your name and organisation. We will verify your membership of SCHC then email you back, providing you with details of how to register.

Your Attention Is Drawn To These Conditions

Delegates can be substituted at any time, subject to payment of membership fee if applicable. However, once booked, the full fee is payable. As this is a limited space training event refunds can only be made if CHCS is notified in advance, and is able to successfully re-offer the place to another delegate.

CHCS reserves the right to alter or cancel the programme due to circumstances beyond our control. If CHCS cancels, then refunds will be made.
