Safety Data Sheet Training

EU CLP (GHS) Classification for Supply - Mixtures
An understanding of the CLP Regulation and the rules for classification of products is essential to ensure that the correct classification is used in preparing good Safety Data Sheets. Specifically this module will build on the knowledge gained in Module 17 (Substances) and equip delegates to deal with classification of mixtures. Delegates will learn how to take data supplied for substances and apply that to the more complex situation of mixtures.

What you will learn
The module will include sessions covering the following topics:

  • CLP Classification – general issues
    • Discussion of new ways of classification including expert judgement, weight of evidence influences, bridging principles, generic cut-off values.  

  • Classification using listed substances
    • How to get data from the Annexes. 

  • Classification for Physical effects
    • Criteria for classification, use of flow charts, bridging and calculations – includes Explosives, Flammables (all types), Oxidisers, Gases, Self-reactives, Pyrophorics, Organic peroxides and Corrosion to metals.

  • Classification for Health effects
    • Includes Toxicity, Corrosion to Skin & Irritancy, Eye damage & Irritancy, Sensitisation, CMRs, STOT (single & repeat exposure), Aspiration. 

  • Classification for Environmental effects (Acute and Chronic Aquatic toxicity, Hazard to the Ozone Layer)

  • Putting it all together to fully classify a mixture
Exercises will be held throughout the day to assist in the understanding of the concepts introduced.

Delegates should be aware that this module addresses the EU CLP regulation which differs in some aspects to the GHS and other regional implementations of the GHS. Where possible differences to GHS will be highlighted during the training.

Who should attend?
This module is mainly aimed at Safety Data Sheet writers and it will be especially useful to those coming into the field for the first time.


As this Module takes the CLP classification of substances as its starting point, it is extremely important that delegates should either have attended Module 17, or have an equivalent level of pre-existing knowledge.

Attendance on this series of modules will ensure that your SDSs meet the increasing expectations of both your customers and the regulators. To ensure the most effective training with optimum involvement in participative exercises, there will be a limit of 14 on the number of students.

Delegates can be substituted at any time, subject to payment of membership fee if applicable. However, once booked, the full fee is payable. If you pay by credit card you can cancel and get a full refund for up to 7 days after you pay. As this is a limited space training event refunds can only be made if CHCS is notified in advance, and is able to successfully re-offer the place to another delegate.

CHCS reserves the right to alter or cancel the programme due to circumstances beyond our control. If CHCS cancels, then refunds will be made.
