Safety Data Sheet Training

EU CLP (GHS) Classification for Supply - Mixtures

With the CLP Regulation bringing in new rules for classification of products it is essential that these are understood.  This will ensure that the correct classification is used in preparing good Safety Data Sheets.  Specifically this module will build on the knowledge gained in Module 17 (Substances) and equip delegates to deal with classification of mixtures. Delegates will learn how to take data supplied for substances and apply that to the more complex situation of mixtures.

Delegates should be aware that this module addresses the European CLP regulation which differs in some aspects to the GHS and other regional implementations of the GHS.

Who should attend?
This module is mainly aimed at Safety Data Sheet writers and it will be especially useful to those coming into the field for the first time and for those who will need to convert their current SDSs to comply with new classifications.

As this Module takes the CLP classification of substances as its starting point, it is extremely important that delegates should either have attended Module 17, or have an equivalent level of pre-existing knowledge.

Benefits of attending
Attendance on this series of modules will ensure that your SDSs meet the increasing expectations of both your customers and the regulators. To ensure the most effective training with optimum involvement in participative exercises, there will be a limit of 14 on the number of students.

IOSH members are entitled to include this module in their continuing professional development records.

Module Tutor
This module will be given by Dr Stuart Longworth. After over 30 years experience with multinational chemical companies in research and regulatory affairs, Stuart is now a health and safety consultant, specialising in areas related to safety data sheets and chemical regulatory legislation.  He has a lot of experience in the preparation and assessment of Safety Data Sheets, and teaches other Modules in this series as well as this one, and was extensively involved in the CHCS assessments of the accuracy of supplied SDSs, which clearly showed the need for training such as this.

What you will learn

The module will include sessions covering the following topics:

  • CLP Classification – general issues
    • Discussion of new ways of classification including expert judgement, weight of evidence influences, bridging principles, generic cut-off values.
  • Classification using listed substances
    • How to get data from the Annexes. Translation Tables (Annex VII).
  • Classification for Physical effects
    • Criteria for classification, use of flow charts, bridging and calculations – includes Explosives, Flammables (all types), Oxidisers, Gases, Self-reactives, Pyrophorics, Organic peroxides and Corrosion to metals.
  • Classification for Health effects
    • Includes Toxicity, Corrosion to Skin & Irritancy, Eye damage & Irritancy, Sensitisation, CMRs, STOT (single & repeat exposure), Aspiration.
  • Classification for Environmental effects

Exercises will be held throughout the day to assist in the understanding of the concepts introduced.

Participants need to bring an electronic copy of the Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures, including Annexes on a laptop or tablet for use during the exercises.

The latest consolidated version of the CLP Regulation can be downloaded from:

Please note: A calculator will also be needed.
